Come step into our ginormous secret artspace in San Francisco and prepare yourself for a heartrending evening of World War II music. Please RSVP so we can calculate the correct carpet radius :-)
As with most Soviet music written at about the same time, Shostakovich's E minor Piano Trio is certainly and inexorably concerned with the devastation of World War II. The piece can be heard as a memorial not just for a dear friend who died in a Nazi concentration camp, but for all those obliterated by the grinding machine of war. The Largo third movement, one of Stravinsky's most profoundly moving laments, was played at the composer's own funeral three decades later.
