Join Ezra Klein and Andrew Marantz for a special taping of The Ezra Klein Show!
The pair will discuss Andrew's new book: ANTISOCIAL: Online Extremists, Techno-Utopians, and the Hijacking of the American Conversation (Viking; October 2019). This is a deeply immersive chronicle of how the optimistic entrepreneurs of Silicon Valley set out to create a free and democratic internet—and how the cynical propagandists of the alt-right exploited that freedom to propel the extreme into the mainstream.
A staff writer at the New Yorker since 2011, Andrew has spent the last several years embedded in two worlds. The first is the world of social-media entrepreneurs—the new gatekeepers of Silicon Valley—who upended all traditional means of receiving and transmitting information with little forethought, but heaps of reckless ambition. The second is the world of the people he calls the gate-crashers—the conspiracists, white supremacists, and nihilist trolls who have become experts at using social media to advance their corrosive agenda. In ANTISOCIAL, Andrew weaves these two worlds together to create a sweeping, unsettling portrait of today’s America—online and IRL.
Ezra and Andrew will discuss how the boundaries between technology, media, and politics have all but been erased, resulting in the deeply broken informational landscape in which we all now live. Their conversation will air on The Ezra Klein Show at a later date. Andrew will be available for questions following the taping.
Doors will open at 7:00pm, and taping will begin at 7:30pm.
Event is free, but donations appreciated. Sliding scale ($0-$20) donations accepted at door.
